History
In the summer of 1964, a small group of talented local people with deep experience in all aspects of theatre came together to organize Showcase Theatre. Among them was local professor Carl Wagner, internationally known sculptor Edgar Patience, and noted area director Joseph Kelly. The motivating force behind the group was the desire to present the great classics of the world as well as experimental pieces in an intimate theatre in the round setting. In October of that year Showcase Theatre debuted with Sir Terence Ratigan's drama Separate Tables , performed at King's College, Wilkes-Barre, with the help of the college faculty's generous assistance. Showcase moved to 30 N. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre in the fall of 1966 and remained in that location for 11 years until a city ordinance required the site to be closed. Wilkes University came to the rescue in the person of Alred S. Groh. Wilkes University hosted Showcase as its theatre-in-residence until 1988. Our current rented facility at 54 Tunkhannock Ave in Exeter became home for the 25th anniversary of Showcase in 1988. The building enabled us to return to our trademark in the round staging. The theatre seats 80 persons and the playing area measures 25'x32'. As we celebrate our 41st anniversary, Showcase can look back on some landmark productions. Some of the shows presented have been Equus, Godspell, Driving Miss Daisy, Gross Indecency, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, 1776, Waiting For Godot, and Macbeth. In 1997 Showcase became a charter member of the Northeast Pennsylvania Theatrical Alliance [NEPTA]. Showcase has won more than 35 awards from NEPTA in that time, including lifetime achievements for Showcase founding members Jane Tomassetti and benefactor Alfred S. Groh. Looking towards the future, Showcase Theatre is planning to find its own property to establish a permanent theatre home. Showcase will continue serving as a vital artistic and cultural resource for the people of Northeastern Pennsylvania by providing opportunity for experiencing and practicing outstanding theatre. |
